Call them nuts. Call them fanatics. Or just call them crazy about goodwill.

A total of 280 plungers took a dip in ice-cold Lac Lavon in Burnsville on Feb. 24 to raise $70,000 for Special Olympics Minnesota. This was the second annual Polar Bear Plunge for the south metro.

Triathlete and Farmington resident Julie Hull was out at Lac Lavon for the plunge with a group of friends. She said her family is used to seeing her take on some extreme events.

'Triathletes are kinda crazy people anyway,' she said. 'We've been getting psyched for this.'

Hull said achieving her dreams of being a triathlete have inspired her to participate in the Polar Bear Plunge as a way to help Special Olympics athletes financially so they can achieve their dreams.

Maple Grove ambassadors Stephanie Plant and Korbin Kvaas were also braving the cold for the cause.

'This is our first plunge. We've never done something this crazy before,' Kvaas said.

'We're just going to run and take a really big leap,' Plant said.

Apple Valley Police Capt. Jon Rechtzigel, his son Mitchell and his daughter Nicole also took part. For Jon and Nicole, it was their second year taking the plunge. Nicole said it was cold last year, but the charity brought her back this year.

'I figured it's for a really good cause and it's over really fast,' Nicole said.

There was a number of other law enforcement agencies, fire departments and civilian teams, such as the Farmington Fire Department, the Burnsville, Eden Prairie and Apple Valley police, and the Minnesota Highway Patrol at the event. Many of them were in costume to make the event even more fun.
